Lincoln’s ODEON is expected to have a busy summer, with countless blockbusters coming your way as of now. From horror to comedy, adventure to animation, there is something for everyone. Here’s a preview of the very best of what’s to come in the next few months:
A Quiet Place
Release date at ODEON Lincoln: April 6th
Already released, A Quiet Place is picking up praise left, right and centre for its intensity and excellent writing. Directed by and starring John Krasinksi from the US version of The Office, A Quiet Place is a far-cry from comedy.
Also starring his real-life wife, Emily Blunt, the film features a family trying to survive in a world with a population almost entirely decimated by an alien race who hunt by sound. Throughout the film, the family must adapt to not making any noise which makes for a truly terrifying proposition.
See reviews for yourself, A Quiet Place is an absolute must-see for horror fans and might even pick up awards for the year’s best film.
Avengers: Infinity War
Release date at ODEON Lincoln: April 26th
Marketed as the most ambitious crossover of all time, Infinity War brings together the Avengers and the Guardians of the Galaxy to save the world in the biggest Marvel film yet.
While it’s actually a sequel to 2015’s Age of Ultron, Infinity War follows on from Captain America: Civil War, Black Panther and Guardians of the Galaxy 2 among others. If you haven’t seen those, and their predecessors, you won’t get the full experience so get watching!
This is the point that Marvel has been waiting to reach with each individual MCU (Marvel Cinematic Universe) release since Iron Man in 2008. The cast is simply ridiculous and there are just too many stars to name but among them are: Robert Downey Jr., Chris Hemsworth, Chris Evans, Chris Pratt, Benedict Cumberbatch, Scarlett Johansson, Tom Hiddleston and Idris Elba… and about 50 more big-name actors.
Infinity War is the story of the heroes of the universe introduced in previous Marvel films coming together to save all of reality from Thanos and his infinity stones, which have also appeared in previous films. It is set to be full to breaking point with drama, action and incredible special effects which make it the most anticipated film of the year. Unmissable.
Deadpool 2
Release date at ODEON Lincoln: May 18th
Here’s one that isn’t for the whole family. 2016’s Deadpool was a huge hit which rewrote the rules of what a superhero film can be. Funny, action-packed and heavy on extreme violence and swearing, Deadpool’s sequel is likely to be just as unsuitable for children.
Ryan Reynold’s Deadpool forms a team called the X-Force (the tongue-in cheek mockery of X-Men is strong here again) to protect a young mutant. Josh Brolin, who also features as Thanos in this summer’s Avengers: Infinity War, plays the antagonist, Cable.
Sure to be hilarious but not for the faint of heart.
Solo: A Star Wars Story
Release date at ODEON Lincoln: May 25th
The latest spin-off from the main Star Wars saga sees Alden Ehrenreich replace Harrison Ford as a young Han Solo trying to make his way in the galaxy. It’s unknown whether this will be a hit like Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, but from trailers appears to keep a lot of the Star Wars spirit which makes the franchise so watchable. Donald Clover comes in as Lando Calrissian and Woody Harrelson and Emilia Clarke also star. Written by the son of Lawrence Kasdan, who directed The Empire Strikes Back, Solo is described as a space western and is set ten years before the first Star Wars films.
It might not be as good as The Last Jedi, but you wouldn’t bet against it. I have a good feeling about this.
Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom
Release date at ODEON Lincoln: June 6th
Nothing new here, if you enjoyed the 2015’s Jurassic World you’re likely to enjoy this too. Directed by J. A. Bayona, with executive producers Colin Trevorrow (who directed Jurassic World) and Stephen Spielberg, who directed the original Jurassic films, Fallen Kingdom once again stars Chris Pratt as Andy Owen, a dinosaur trainer and lover, with Bryce Dallas Howard as Claire Dearing.
The story follows Pratt as he attempts to rescue the same dinosaurs that have been running wild on Isla Nublar, which has been abandoned since the events of Jurassic World. Four years on, a volcanic eruption threatens their extinction.
Don’t expect substance over style, this film is perfect viewing for the whole family, with stunning visuals and an easy-to-follow story. It won’t win any awards, but you’ll have a lot of fun watching it.
Oceans 8
Release date at ODEON Lincoln: June 8th
Following on from the all-female Ghostbusters from 2016, Ocean’s 8 is an upcoming, all-female spin-off of Stephen Soderbergh’s Oceans Trilogy. Originally starring George Clooney, Brad Pitt and Andy Garcia, this spin-off features Sandra Bullock as Debbie Ocean, the sister of Danny from the original trilogy. A comedy-heist film with an emphasis on comedy, the film will be produced by Soderbergh himself and follows the attempts of Bullock and co. to pull of the perfect heist. Starring alongside the Gravity star are Cate Blanchett, Anne Hathaway, Mindy Kaling, Helena Bonham Carter, and Rihanna, with cameos from original cast members, Brad Pitt and Carl Reiner.
It could completely ruin the original trilogy or it could be a surprising hit, it’s difficult to tell from trailers. Fans of Oceans Eleven, Twelve and Thirteen and fans of comedy in general should give it a chance though.
Incredibles 2
Release date at ODEON Lincoln: June 15th
Fans of the original Pixar hit, The Incredibles have had to wait 14 years for a sequel but now, here it is. The first film is a Disney fan favourite and Incredibles 2 will appeal to parents and their children alike, while also likely to attract young adults who liked the first film growing up. Its appeal will make it one of the most popular films this summer and there’s no reason to believe it won’t be one of the best.
The animation looks updated visually from its prequel but the story is said to carry on directly. The Parr family struggles again with balancing their normal and super lives, but this time the emphasis is on Elastigirl (Holly Hunter), while Mr Incredible (Craig T. Nelson) becomes a stay-at-home dad.
Simply a must-see.
Ant-Man and the Wasp
Release date at ODEON Lincoln: July 6th
Anyone who has seen 2015’s Ant-Man will know that it was a huge amount of fun. The sequel, Ant-Man and the Wasp, looks to be no different. Paul Rudd returns as Scott Laing, a man with a suit which can make him change size at will, giving him a highly useful superpower. He’s joined by the Wasp, played by Evangeline Lily, the daughter of Hank Pym (Michael Douglas) who invented the size-changing technology.
Set after the events of Captain America: Civil War, this film is a must-see for fans of the Marvel Cinematic universe and while it’s not yet clear if Ant-Man will appear in Avengers: Infinity War, there are bound to be connections.
Mission: Impossible – Fallout
Release date at ODEON Lincoln: July 27th
Your mission, should you choose to accept it, is to see the latest in the Mission: Impossible saga. Tom Cruise returns as Ethan Hunt, alongside Simon Pegg, Rebecca Ferguson, Alec Baldwin and the latest addition to the franchise, Henry Cavill (Man of Steel, Justice League). The story follows Ethan on a mission to prevent global catastrophe while his loyalty to his government is doubted by the CIA. If that sounds familiar that’s because it’s essentially the same story as the previous MI film, albeit with a slightly different mission. Despite this, Fallout is expected to be an action-packed, fun movie which is mostly what you want from a film like this. Again, not likely to win any awards, but easy to watch.
Christopher Robin
Release date at ODEON Lincoln: August 3rd
It’s Disney, it’s for all the family, and it’s bound to make you nostalgic. Christopher Robin follows the story of Winnie the Pooh and his friends attempting to reinvigorate Christopher Robin’s (Ewan McGregor) imagination, which he has lost since growing up. The film also stars Hayley Atwell, Mark Gatiss, Peter Capaldi, Jim Cummings and Chris O’Dowd. Christopher is all grown up and is a businessman who finds his childhood friends in a feel-good adventure. A must-see for people of any age.
