Mum knows best, and mum deserves the best. Here’s our guide to spoiling your mum on a budget.

The 22nd of March, Mothering Sunday, or simply Mother’s day, can be one of the most surprisingly stressful days of the year. Try as we might, it is a near impossible task to repay the love, time, and of course, money, that mums across the country provide. Even harder still is finding a gift that receives more of a response than just ‘it’s the thought that counts’ and remains affordable. Sure, a box of chocolates might do, maybe some flowers, or possibly a comeback album by that bloke she liked in the 80s, but surely we can do better?

For a student on a budget, here are some ideas on how you can treat your mum, without breaking the bank.

Charity Shopping

If you are on a tight budget and want to provide a little to somebody in need, having a browse in a charity shop might reveal some hidden treasures that your mum might just adore. Just for added measures, second-hand shopping is also eco-friendly and produces little to no waste, that is if your mum likes the gift.

DIY

You might remember making a Mother’s day card in Primary School, this is the same concept just hopefully with a bit more quality. Home-made vouchers, hampers full of little treats, and baked goods are all cheap, easy-to-do and quick to assemble if you are low on time. They also show a lot of thought and add a personal touch that expensive gadgets and jewellery might fail to attain.

Cheap day out

Lincoln itself has a lot to offer in this regard. From the usual suspects such as the Cathedral, Castle and various art installations and museums, to the more creative; from The Little Pottery Studio in St. Mark’s Shopping Centre, to a trip to see the stage at Lincoln’s New Theatre Royal or at the Drill Hall. All of which possibly fall within the most expensive options on this list, especially when you factor in travel and food, but it’ll make for a memorable day.

Voucher sites and local shops

Voucher sites such as Groupon may offer discounts or freebies and if there is ever an opportunity to make use of a student discount this might be the day. Lots of local restaurants may also be offering free drinks, or even a pudding so make sure to keep an eye out as this all adds up.

Peace and Quiet

Sometimes it’s the simple things that go a long way, a bit of tidying the house and doing the chores you would rather not be doing will provide your mum with some much needed quiet time. If you can cook you could even make her a nice dinner, or at least an alright one. It’s important to remember that your mum has put up with many years of your screaming, crying and a bit of teenage angst, one day of peace could make the difference.
