Last week marked the third anniversary of the death of former University of Lincoln student, Grace Millane who was murdered during a gap year in New Zealand in 2018.
Every year since 2019 the University of Lincoln Hockey Club, the society of which Grace was a member, celebrate the life and legacy of Grace through an annual week of fundraising concluding with 250-minute mixed hockey game
Grace was a former member of the hockey club during her time as a student and the game is often attended by alumni students and friends that would’ve played with Grace.
Emma Courtie, who is the hockey society’s vice president, believes the week is more than just raising money for charity.
“It is such an important week for ULHC to get involved in and celebrate her life and legacy, as Grace was a beloved member of the club. By raising awareness is sport that is often male dominated, it begins to create a safer space for women.”
“Sports and activities are often used to fundraise, by combining this and the sport that Grace loved, as well as many other that want to participate, it allows for us to spread awareness throughout our university and other Universities and increase the efforts for a safer environment for women across the world.”
In total the students raised £3,221 for three charities close to the hearts of Grace’s family and friends.
The charities that will have the money raised split equally between them are The Blue Door, White Ribbon UK, and the Lucie Blackman Trust.
University of Lincoln Students’ Union Sports Officer, Louis Williams says the week really illustrates the University and Students Unions spirit.
“Grace’s week is one of the many instances already that shows how supportive and powerful our student community is when we all come together for a positive cause.”
“This week has been incredible on the behalf of our sports societies and to use their allocated training times to host events to raise money for charity.”
