What is Parkinson’s?

Parkinson’s disease is a condition where the brain becomes progressively damaged over many years. The cause of the disease is a loss of nerve cells in a part of the brain called the substantia nigra. The main symptoms include involuntary shaking of particular parts of the body (tremor) slow movement and stiff and inflexible muscles. Most experts say Parkinson’s is a combination of genetic and environmental factors is responsible.

It is thought that around 1 in 500 people in the UK is affected, which works out at around 127,000 people overall. Men are also more likely to get the disease than Women. There is currently no cure for Parkinson’s, but treatments are progressing and patients can expect to experience reduced symptoms and to live a good quality of life.
