Topping the charts as one of the worst cities in the midlands for binge drinking and drugs, measures are now being put in place to control the growing reputation.
The statistics were revealed in research published by the North West Public Health Observatory, compiled using NHS and police data.
It also came fourth for alcohol related crimes and fifth for alcohol related sexual offences.
In Britain the annual cost to employers is estimated to be £6.4 billion while the cost to the NHS is in the region of £1.7bn.
Alcohol related problems are also responsible for 22,000 premature deaths each year.
Assistant manager of the Slug and Lettuce, Sarah Edwards, has already had to enforce some of these restrictions and said; “Every year more and more students come it gets worse.”
