Lincolnshire Fire and Rescue service are encouraging people to have sprinklers installed in their home.
The sprinklers systems are usually fitted in commercial buildings rather than the home, according to Lincolnshire Fire and Rescue. But they want more people to put them in their homes because they say the sprinklers save lives.
Fire fighters demonstrated the system at their training centre at RAF Waddington in Lincolnshire. They showed what would happen to a house on fire with and without a sprinkler.
Kieran Gatenby, Lincoln Community Fire Officer explained after the demonstration that:
“The sprinkler system we’ve shown today isn’t an expensive task but we’ve proven that it can put out a small fire quickly, without the need for fire doors and using things like that.”
Managing Director of Nation Wide Fire Sprinklers, Keith Roads, said:
“Within the five or six minutes it may take in a urban situation the fire can already be out of control and people can already be dead. If the fire isn’t suppressed in around three minutes the smoke can spread through the house and by this time it’s already too late for the occupants in the building. This is why people die in the buildings, not because of the fire but the smoke it produces.”
