An investment of £1.68 million will see the regeneration of the surrounding landscape at St Mary’s Le Wigford church in the city.
The money has been provided by Lincoln’s High Street Heritage Action Zone.
Dr Begum Ulusoy, Senior Lecturer in spatial design at the University of Lincoln, said: “This plan is very positive. It is referencing something that is much needed in Lincoln.
“I think this design can work as long as biophilic design is integrated with the greenery.”
Dr Ulusoy added: “Biophilic design is an approach to architecture which interconnects built environments with local people.
“You can see an identity problem between the history of the buildings and what’s happening there and that should be resolved as soon as possible.”
There are 15 other grade 1 listed buildings on the high street. Dr Ulusoy said: “The buildings on high street are magnificent and I would love to see them as part of something bigger.”
Historic England spokesperson, said: “The works will not only allow this wonderful building to shine but also improve the public space for the benefit of all – from parishioners to visitors.
“We are thrilled to see Lincoln’s High Street Heritage Action Zone have a such a striking and positive impact on the ground.”
