With the recent snowfall in the county, it’s not just city businesses that are feeling the cold. Lincolnshire’s farming communities have also been hit with bad weather and extra precautions are being taken this year to help fight the frost.
G H Chennell specialises in the production of vegetables. One way of protecting the farm’s carrots is to cover the crops with a thick layer of straw. This creates a barrier for the frost, therefore keeping the carrots in good condition.
Jim Elvidge, Farm Manager, says this can be costly: “We’re getting to the point now, where we need at least a thirty percent increase on price of the sold carrot product, to cover the cost of straw,” he says.
Our reporter Christine Diffey went to a local farm to see how they are coping with the chill.
