Two penalties by midfielder Lauren Churcher allowed Lincoln United WFC to push through what their manager called their “worst performance in 12 months”.

A 2-1 victory over Mansfield LFC, a team in the league above, put Chris Funnell’s side into the final where they will face fellow East Midlands Women’s Regional Football League Division 1 side Chesterfield WFC.

The two teams faced off in windy conditions, making it hard to play the ball in the air

Chesterfield held off Northampton Town Women in a 1-0 victory, meaning the two sides at the top of the EMWRL Division 1 will meet at the final.

Looking ahead at the final, manager Chris Funnell said: “The last two years we’ve been neck and neck. Chesterfield are a good team, they show up every week, win, done and so we’re going to have to be good to get something out of next week.”

Due to their season being null and void, both sides have since applied to be promoted. The two teams finished in the top two in consecutive null and void seasons, leading to frustration from both camps.

Speaking on the final Lincoln United goalkeeper Katy Gilbert said: “To be in the final is no less than what everyone in the club deserves.

“No doubt it’ll be a tough game, but we’ll be more than ready.”
