Several businesses in Lincoln have come out in support of Ukraine during their current crisis by boycotting Russian products, cancelling Russian shows and promoting fundraisers.

The New Theatre Royal in Lincoln was set to host Russian Opera ‘Madama Butterfly’ on Saturday, March 19th. However, the theatre issued an official statement to announce the show’s cancellation following Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. They announced all customers will be offered credit, refunds, or allowed to transfer tickets.

Oliver Rushby, a staff member at the theatre, said: “The production company and the theatre mutually made the decision. It’s in everyone’s best interest.”

The crisis has triggered a significant domino effect.

Lincoln pizzeria Dough LoCo announced via Instagram that they would stop stocking Russian-owned Stoli vodka and donate a percentage of their March profits to Ukrainian refugee charities. Their announcement reads: “Like most of you, we’re horrified by what’s going on. As a business, we’re in a better position than most to offer support where we can.”

Matt Barnes, the owner of Dough LoCo, said: “We felt it necessary to do what we could to support the people of Ukraine.”

Major supermarket chains such as Morrison’s, Tesco, and Sainsbury’s, also announced that they would stop selling Russian vodka nationwide. The Morrison’s on Tritton Road, Lincoln has also put up leaflets encouraging all to donate to aid efforts.

Lincolnshire MP Andrew Percy also visited the Ukrainian embassy recently to discuss what more the UK can do to provide support to those in Ukraine.
