East Midland’s roads have been labelled as the most dangerous in the country, according to a new report by the Road Safety Foundation.
The foundation reported that the risk of death and serious injury is higher on major roads in the East Midlands than any other region.
There were nearly two thousand crashes causing death or serious injury on motorways and A-roads between 2010 and 2012.
The risk of these types of crashes was also two thirds more likely to occur in this region than in the West Midlands.
The Road Safety Foundation chairman, Lord Whitty of Camberwell, said: “The differing risk in each region is explained very largely by how much travel there is on safe roads and how much on risky roads.
“The busier the road, the more frequently any flaw in layout leads to death and serious injury.”
This news comes a day after the Department for Transport announced that the number of cycling injuries on roads has increased by a thousand over the past few years.
