Arsenal football club announced earlier today that Arsene Wenger would be stepping down as their manager after 22 years in charge. Under his reign, Arsenal have won seven FA Cups and three Premier league titles including the 2003-04 Invincible season. The Frenchman’s resignation means that Arsenal football club will have a new manager for the first time since 1996 when they take to the field next season. Here are a list of potential successors to Wenger’s throne.
1) Carlo Ancelotti
The Italian manager has been without a job since being sacked by Bayern Munich last September following a 3-0 defeat to PSG. In his 23 year managerial career, Ancelotti has won four domestic league titles and three Champions league titles in the many clubs that he has managed. A veteran manager with a penchant for success wherever he has managed, the former Chelsea gaffer would be an ideal replacement for Arsenal football club.
2) Thomas Tuchel
The former Mainz and Borussia Dortmund manager has been on footballing hiatus since parting ways with Dortmund in May, 2017. Tuchel took charge from Jurgen Klopp at Dortmund in 2015 and helped the club win the DFB Pokal a couple of years later. Like Wenger, the German manager is known for promoting young players to the first team with the likes of Christian Pulisic, Ousmane Dembele and Julian Weigl making debuts under his tenure. This impetus towards promoting youngsters coupled with his fast paced attacking brand of football could help land Thomas Tuchel a job at the Emirates next season.
3) Diego Simeone
Despite rumours linking him with a move away from Madrid surfacing ever summer, the Argentine manager has stayed put at Atletico Madrid since taking charge in 2011. However, a chance to manage a top Premier league club and a move to London could be too good an opportunity to turn down and Simeone’s constant ability to deliver success despite losing his top players makes him a candidate too good to overlook for the Arsenal board.
4) Joachim Loew
World cup winning manager Joachim Loew replacing Arsene Wenger for next season would send Arsenal Fan TV into delirium. The 58 year old has been manager of the German national team since 2006 and has helped his country win the 2014 World Cup, the 2017 Confederations Cup and also being runners up in the 2008 Euros. His sights might as of now be set of retaining Germany’s World Cup but the prospect of managing Arsenal post the World Cup would be an offer too enticing to refuse.
5) Patrick Vieira
Arsenal club legend Patrick Vieira has tried his hand at management post retirement in 2011 and is currently the manager of MLS side New York City FC. The Frenchman returning to the holy grail of the Emirates stadium as manager would certainly be well received by the fans but his lack of managerial experience at such a high level could make him less favourable to land the job.
6) Luis Enrique
Former Barcelona manager Luis Enrique has been on a sabbatical from work after parting ways with the Spanish club in March 2017. A full year later, the 47 year old Spaniard would be rearing to get back to the field and Arsenal football club could be an ideal stepping stone for him.
7) Sean Dyche
Burnley manager Sean Dyche would be in seventh heaven with the way his team have been performing this season. His side are 7th on the league table this season, only two points below Arsenal and could end up finishing the league ahead of the team from North London. Despite a limited budget, Dyche has managed to achieve remarkable success with his team and seems destined to play in Europe next season. The Burnley manager could be the dark horse in this race to be the next Arsenal manager just like Wenger was 22 years back when he was signed from the little known Japanese team Nagoya Grampus Eight.
