The litter’s outnumbering the pickers in North Hykeham

Litter on North  Hykeham’s Millennium Green has all but disappeared. This is thanks to a group of volunteers, led by Nicola Masdaam, who meet every Monday morning to collect what others have left behind and they’re looking for new helpers.

The Green surrounds a large lake and is used by a variety of people. For some, it’s a shortcut home. For others, it’s a scenic route to walk the dog. For some, it’s a place to socialise with friends.

The grassy banks of the lake provide a seemingly perfect place to congregate and, despite several signs banning alcohol and open fires, plus regular police patrols, bottles and charred ashes are often left strewn across the ground.

Dog walkers (pictured) are significant culprits in the leaving of litter. Whilst some don’t pick up their dog’s leavings, others do but simply hang the bags from trees or, in some cases, throw them into the bushes.

This community volunteer group removes the litter every week and they’re looking for new volunteers.

Anyone wishing to join them just needs to meet at the main entrance to the Green (off Station Road) at ten o’clock on Monday mornings.
