People living in council run accommodation have been asked to remove all personal items from any communal areas.
In April 2018, all residents in South Kesteven District Council (SKDC) received the letter pictured explaining that all personal items will be removed from communal areas in SKDC run accommodation.
The letter describes how all personal belongings were considered a fire risk and will be removed at the end of May and destroyed if not claimed within seven days.
One resident, who didn’t wish to be named, said: “It is ridiculous really. Just from one extreme to the other. I can’t believe they even want me to take photos down. They just brighten up my doorway.”
Councillor Nick Neilson, our Cabinet Member for Communities, said: “We take all safety measures seriously. We decided to ask tenants to remove such items from outside their homes following the recommendations of a safety audit. By doing so it means that in the event of an evacuation, potentially in limited visibility, everyone has the best possible chance of remaining safe.”
The decision was taken following a fire safety procedures review following the tragic events of the Grenfell tower incident in London.
