Lincolnshire’s roads are some of the most dangerous in the country, according to a new report by the Department for Transport.
The figures have revealed that 36 people died and 282 were seriously injured on Lincolnshire’s rural roads last year – the highest of any county in the East Midlands.
Sixty per cent of all road fatalities occur in rural areas – but many drivers are unaware of the risks.
John Siddle, from Lincolnshire Road Safety Partnership, said: ”We know what the safest roads are in the UK, and that’s motorways…sadly in Lincolnshire we don’t have any motorways, so we’re left with rural roads. When things go wrong, ditches, dykes, water-filled drains and trees come in to play”.
The Department for Transport has also released a hard-hitting video as part of its Think! campaign, aimed at persuading motorists to slow down.
