‘Veganuary’ was launched at the start of the year to try and encourage more people to take on a vegan diet with more and more restaurants introducing vegan options.
One of the main talking points of the month was Greggs’ new vegan sausage roll which ended up going viral on social media.
The idea of ‘Veganuary’ was to try and encourage people to try a new lifestyle at the start of the New Year however the challenging part may be keeping people on the vegan diet long term.
One member of the University of Lincoln Vegan society, Lynsey Louise Lion spoke about the increase in veganism due to this year’s ‘Veganuary’ campaign.
She said: “This has been a massive year for the Veganuary campaign with more participants than ever, with people becoming more compassionate and aware of the benefits of veganism.”
She also mentioned how more places are offering vegan options: “I have seen a massive increase in the amount of vegan products available thanks to the high demand. A few examples include Papa John’s vegan cheese pizzas, M&S plant kitchen range and Greggs. There are so many reasons to go vegan, whether that be for the animals, your health or the environment.”
However, a Toby’s carvery employee said he hasn’t seen much of an increase in the popularity of vegan dishes this month.
He said: “I don’t think vegan options have really been on the rise this month as most people just prefer the meat options.”
He added: “Although the most popular vegan option is probably the Roast Mushroom and Ale Pie and we do offer a meat free carvery, as well as some other vegan dishes.”
Toby’s carvery are one of many places now offering a vegan menu for customers, other restaurants in Lincoln such as Wagamama and JD Wetherspoon also offer a vegan menu.
