Lincoln Castle’s New Steps

Lincolns Castle marks some of it’s final stages in restoration as a 50 foot, wrought iron spiral staircase has been lifted and carefully placed within the castles walls.
Project managers and crane operators took part in heated debate as winds picked up atop of steep hill and  lifting machinery had to be manouvered around the site.

Around 100 bystanders, lift operators and staff from the castle held their breath as it was lifted from the bed of a truck horizontally and then vertically lifted above the 900 year old walls. Once on the ground, it was greeted by a round of applause and a thumbs up from the crane operator.

Programme Manager, Mary Powell, who has worked on the project for almost 10 years spoke about the pleasure it has given her to see the stairs in the air and to see the project coming to an end.

“You’re almost setting the castle for the next generation, so that its in a good state of repair, offer a good experience to visitors and just that, you’re sorting it out and handing it over in a better state than you’ve found it.”

The restored castle will hopefully be ready for tourists next summer. Find more information on the Castle here.
