Lincoln Conservative MP Karl McCartney is meeting with council leaders today to discuss the proposed plans to change Lincolnshire’s council structure to a unitary system.
The meeting comes after the leader of Lincolnshire County Council, Martin Hill, called for Lincolnshire’s council system to change to a unitary authority, with plans to hold a referendum on the matter.
Lincolnshire County Councillors are set to vote on whether to hold a referendum on Friday, February 24, with the potential for the referendum to take place as soon as Thursday, May 4.
Mr Hill has said that the switch to the unitary authority could free up around £150 million of spending over five years, which equates to approximately £30 million each year.
However, in response, the leader of the City of Lincoln Council, Ric Metcalfe opposed the views of Mr Hill, saying that the view was not shared by most of the district councils in Lincolnshire, and that the County Council is acting in a rogue manner.
The council system in Lincolnshire is vast, and the proposed plans to convert to a unitary authority aims to free up spending and simplify the whole system in Lincolnshire.
