Brayford floating restaurant protest

A ‘floating’ protest will take place this Saturday, October 31st, to campaign against proposed plans for a new restaurant to be built on the Brayford Pool.

If planning permission is granted, the restaurant will be constructed on the former viewing platform which is opposite Chimichanga’s.

Campaigners are arguing that another restaurant is unnecessary and will ruin the view of the river and the protest will feature a flotilla, a small group of moving boats, on the Brayford.

David Ribeiro, Supervisor at Chimichanga, a restaurant on the Brayford, is against the plans. He said: “ It will cut the views for the students and customers.”

However, David Rossington from Investors in Lincoln says that even with the new restaurant, ‘80% of the river will still be open views’.

He said: “The Heritage report says that there is room for one more restaurant on the Brayford without it ruining the landscape”.

Investors in Lincoln and The Brayford Trust, two non-profitable organisations, are behind the development. They say that the development is needed to protect the river.

A lot of silt regularly goes into the Brayford Pool which can cause severe damage to the boats moored in the river. Over half a million pounds is needed to dredge the river and clear the silt and the profit created from the restaurant will be used for this procedure.

“We will lose the Brayford if this issue isn’t resolved,” continued Mr Rossington “We are ensuring that the Brayford is there for future generations.”

The protest will take place at 3pm.
