A study by Cancer Research has found that teenagers drink a bath tub full of sugar drinks a year – that’s 234 cans per person.
The study comes after the government promised a tax on sugar drinks in England last March.
The recommended amount of daily sugar for teenagers and adults shouldn’t exceed 30 grams a day, a five-year-old should have less than 19 grams and a ten-year-old shouldn’t have more than 24 grams a day.
However, a single can of full-fat cola contains 35 grams, the equivalent of nine teaspoons of sugar, which is more than an adults suggested daily amount.
Fizzy drinks are the main source of added sugar in a teenagers diet and this can lead to health problems such as obesity.
